Our Story

The story of Desi Daawat

We are Singapore-based chefs and moms, passionate about showcasing the fascinating range of flavours and histories that define the cuisines we love. Desi Daawat is home to our experiments, our stories, and our love for food, inspired by the beautiful world around us. We hail from India, and have lived in China, Singapore and other countries that have one thing in common – cultures with fascinating culinary traditions and a varied flavour profile. Our recipes are food stories from around the world, with that touch of home – that hint of Indian tadka – the magical art of seasoning that makes Indian food so especially flavourful.

“We love bringing a hint of Indian tadka to all the fascinating cuisines we’ve learnt from our travels”

Divya and Misty

“Our journeys have been different, but we’ve found ourselves at the same destination.” Divya started cooking when she was little older than 7, standing beside her mother, she learned the ways of traditional slow cooking with fresh and local produce, and has always appreciated cooking with what’s available with the natural rhythms of any place she’s lived in. With marriage, Divya lived in China, and now calls Singapore home. The unique food culture in both countries gave her opportunities to experiment with recipes that are particular to the region as well as incorporating specific techniques into her Indian cooking.

Misty, on the other hand, started cooking when she was in her late twenties, after choosing to leave a demanding banking career to look after her young son. She loves travelling to different countries and incorporating their cultures and cuisines into her everyday cooking. Both are moms to lively young food critics [unofficial critics, of course!), and together enjoy coming up with new ways to recreate the range of cuisines and flavours they love.

Our Food Philosophy

Flavour Seekers.

When you understand the flavour of a dish, you can create magic with it to spice up any meal. We are deeply inspired by Indian flavours and naturally bring that tadka to all our dishes and food experiments. Our recipes and classes will help you understand history, ingredients and spices to create your own inspired and delicious food.

Celebrate Cultures.

Our recipes are celebrations of the diverse origins and journeys that food take across cultures. Every dish has a story, and we are here to help you appreciate and share the stories behind the food you create.

Mindful Eating.

No matter your diet or lifestyle preference, your plate of food should be delicious. After all, food is not just about nutrition. Our recipes help you eat mindfully while also enjoying your favourite dishes. Our kitchen experiments are brought out in recipes that let you experiment with flavours and exploring substitutes for ingredients with locally available produce and condiments. All our recipes can be tweaked to suit vegan, vegetarian, keto, sugar-free and other specific diets.

“Cooking is meant to be fun and easy – know your ingredients and flavours, and you can recreate anything in your own style”
