Bringing An Indian Twist To Mediterranean Cuisine

24 September 2021 | Global tadka, Lebanon, Snacks and Appetizers

Though they hail from different parts of the world, Mediterranean and Indian cuisines have a lot in common. Spices such as black pepper and cardamom that are a staple in the Indian pantry can easily be found in your Mediterranean cookbook, and the similarities don’t stop there.

Indian cuisine has its dahi – yoghurt, Mediterranean cuisine has its tzatziki. You have the Indian chapati and the Mediterranean pita. The pita isn’t complete without a bowl of hummus to dip it into, and curry is your chapati’s best friend.

But what happens when you bring these two worlds together? Absolute magic!

Due to their similar ingredients and cooking styles, the fusion of Mediterranean dishes using Indian flavours/ingredients was almost organic

Read on to find out how we’ve brought these two foodie cultures together!

Pita bread

The Pita Bread is a Mediterranean classic – often likened to the beloved Indian chapati. And just like any staple, every household has its own take on it. Manakish Za’atar is one such variation of the pita – a Levantine bread made with za’atar spice.

Za’atar spice is the garam masala of Mediterranean cooking – you can find the spice blend in almost every dish. However, the spice blend is as easily available outside Middle Eastern countries, so we decided to give the Pita Bread a little Indian twist.

We swap the za’atar for the Indian achaar (pickle) – our own blend of spices that can be found atop every Indian dining table. The spicy and tangy flavour of the achar makes it a great alternative to the Manakish.

Falafel

If you like the Mediterranean falafel, you’d love our Indian take on it! Falafel is a deep-fried ball or patty made out of chickpeas, served in a pita pocket with some fresh veggies on the side and a drizzle of tahini.

Indian food is high in protein, and so we made our take on the falafel more nutritious by using black chickpea instead of white. The patty made from the chickpea can get dry, so we add some paneer to achieve that melt-in-your-mouth feel that leaves you going for seconds almost immediately.

Souvlaki Chicken

Souvlaki chicken is a popular street food item in Greece – made with small pieces of chicken grilled on a skewer. It uses a simple marinade of lemon juice, olive oil, and herbs, but we wouldn’t be Indian if we didn’t add just a touch of spice. Inspired by the Reshmi kebab we add a few extra spices such as cayenne pepper and cumin and top it off with the herbs used in the traditional souvlaki chicken.

These recipes are simple yet delicious – bringing you the wonderful flavours of Mediterranean cuisine with ingredients you can easily find at home. They will surely be a hit at the next dinner party! And if you’re not in the mood to make these yourself, you can just try our Greek platter – filled with falafels, Mediterranean spread and dips, and so much more – all ready to eat!
